General

CyrAcademisator has been developed for use with Russian language. Cyrillic letters which are of no relevance for modern or historic Russian have been omitted. Most letters may be used in other Slavic languages, too. However, many letters bear a different pronounciation in these languages which is the reason why only Russian language has been taken into consideration.

View and fonts

Some Church Slavonic and diacritic letters (especially ALA-LC) are not recognized by some browsers. This problem may be solved by installing the appropriate font locally on your computer: RomanCyrillic Std or CampusRoman Std (which see the font's homepage).

Fewest fonts support all Cyrillic letters. If you want to define a font of your choice then do this in your browser's options. There you will be able to assign any font to the language of your choice. Check out Cyrillic freeware fonts at obshtezhitie and Kodeks.

Tools

The virtual keyboard makes it possible to enter Cyrillic letters, just click the symbol in CyrAcademisator. JavaScript must be enabled. Source: JavaScript Graphical/Virtual Keyboard Interface

The dictionaries always look up the whole contents of the text field why they are best appropriate for single words or shorter constructions. JavaScript must be enabled.

By using the advanced settings it is possible to individually adapt input and output according to well-established exceptions and variants. In addition it is possible to turn on a detailed conversion and problems report. Cookies must be enabled.

Notes on the transliteration styles

ISO R/9

Advanced settings: input and output

It is possible to convert from one variant of ISO R/9 to another (From: ISO R/9 - To: ISO R/9 + advanced settings).

Features: A standard from 1968. Allows several exceptions and variants. Due to missing standardisation of Old Church Slavonic letters these will be converted according the Scientific conversion style. Conversion differs between Russian Church Slavonic (modern pronounciation) and Old Church Slavonic.

ISO 9 / GOST 7.79A

Advanced settings: not possible

Features: A standard from 2000. In this case GOST and ISO are congruent. Each modern Cyrillic letter is assigned to a single Latin letter. This standard contains all modern Cyrillic letters regardless their pronounciation in the different languages. Church Slavonic letters are only defined if they are used in a modern language.

GOST 7.79B

Advanced settings: not possible

Features: This standard does not use diacritics. In exchange some letters must be transliterated with more than one Latin letter. Transliterates Church Slavonic only according to modern Russian pronounciation.

Wissenschaftliche Transliteration

Advanced settings: output

Features: Traditional standard in scientific works. Conversion differs between Russian Church Slavonic (modern pronounciation) and Old Church Slavonic.

ALA-LC

Advanced settings: output

Features: Scientific standard in the English-speaking countries. Diacritics may be turned of in the advanced settings. Conversion differs between Russian Church Slavonic (modern pronounciation) and Old Church Slavonic.

Translit

Advanced settings: not possible

Features: Recommended only as a makeshift. No standard in a narrower sense, however widely used. Many variants, no diacritics. Transliterates Church Slavonic only according to modern Russian pronounciation.

Duden

Die Duden-Transkription gilt in den deutschsprachigen Ländern als Standard für die Transkription des Russischen. Die verschiedenen Teile der Transkription werden in der Öffentlichkeit aber regelmäßig missachtet, zum Teil aus guten Gründen. Die verschiedenen Sonderregeln können daher einzeln in den erweiterten Einstellungen ausgeschaltet werden.

Dansk Sprognævn

The Danish standard for transcription of Russian is defined by Dansk Sprognævn, the Danish Language Committee. Some inaccuracies of this standard can be changed in the advanced settings: change of the transcription of ж to zj (instead of sj, which is aready used for ш).

Embed CyrAcademisator to your own web site

Joomla

You can find the Joomla module for CyrAcademisator in the download area. The module contains a simple form for setting input/output style and the virtual Russian keyboard. The module can be modified in the backend (see picture). It is localised for the languages Englisch, German, Russian and Danish.

Embedding form with HTML

CyrAcademisator may be embedded into other web sites (check the example on the right).

Following code may be freely used and modified.

Embed to LibX

Furthermore it is possible to embed CyrAcademisator to the research add-on LibX by adding it to the catalogues. In LibX you may then choose between 10 predefined transliteration pairs. To embed it to the own edition of LibX, I recommend to use the solution used in the LibX edition "Library catalogues lookup for Russian and Slavic studies in Copenhagen" which can be found in the edition builder. Once found, simply click on "make a copy of..."  to check the settings (see "catalogues").
