CyrAcademisator is a transliteration tool for Russian texts.

CyrAcademisator was made especially for academic use at universities and for research purposes. It makes possible a fast conversion of Russian texts to established scientific transliteration styles. A conversion back to Cyrillic is possible, as it is possible to convert from one transliteration to another. Old Church Slavonic and Old Russian characters are recognized and can be entered into the text field with a provided virtual Russian keyboard.

Please note that this documentation refers to the Russian transliteration which may differ in some parts to the Church Slavonic transliteration tool.

CyrAcademisator can:

  • Transliterate Russian texts
  • Convert between transliterations
  • Process Church Slavonic characters
  • Adapt transliteration styles
for individual use (see advanced settings)

CyrAcademisator cannot:

  • Deal with Cyrillic characters of other languages
    (only Russian and Church Slavonic)
  • Convert character encodings
  • Decrypt wrongly displayed characters

General

CyrAcademisator has been developed for use with Russian language. Cyrillic letters which are of no relevance for modern or historic Russian have been omitted. Most letters may be used in other Slavic languages, too. However, many letters bear a different pronounciation in these languages which is the reason why only Russian language has been taken into consideration.

Usage

After input of the text to be converted and after choosing the desired target style click on the button "transliterate".

On the following page the result of the conversion will be displayed in the top text field while the field below displays the original input.

Target text

It is necessary to indicate the target transliteration style. The target ist to be declared in the right option box below the input field.

Input text: automatic detection

CyrAcademisator tries as default to detect the input style automatically, weither it is a text in Cyrillic or a transliteration. In case it is a transliteration it checks if the text is one of the following styles: ISO-R9, ISO-9, ALA-LC diacritics, GOST 7.79B or Scientific. All other styles are not implemented yet for auto detection. If you face problems see troobleshooting.

Input text: manual choice

It is also possible to determine manually which of which transliteration style the input is. Choose the style of your input (for example ISO R-9, ALA-LC etc.) in the left option box below the input field.

Besides this main function there are other useful tools in CyrAcademisator. See tools.

View and fonts

CyrAcademisator uses an embedded font so all Church Slavonic and diacritic letters (especially ALA-LC) will be displayed. When copying text from CyrAcademisator somewhere else some characters might display wrongly. This problem may be solved by installing the appropriate font locally on your computer: Kliment, RomanCyrillic Std, CampusRoman Std or BukyVede, see also this link list.

Tools

Not all tools work in any browser and some functions require JavaScript or Cookies. The basic transliteration functions will still work in all browsers.

Virtual keyboard

The virtual keyboard makes it possible to enter Cyrillic letters, just click the symbol in CyrAcademisator. Source: JavaScript Graphical/Virtual Keyboard Interface.

Advanced settings

By using the advanced settings it is possible to individually adapt input and output according to well-established exceptions and variants.

Troubleshooting

ErrorPossible reason
Solution
The input text is a transliteration but gets recongnized as a text in Cyrillic The input text contains at least 1 Cyrillic character Choose the style of your input manually in the lower input box and make a new conversion
The input text was not recognised, instead the input style is "undetermined" This is no error. The input text consists only of characters which are the same in all styles. That is why the text could be converted succesfully The conversion is correct
The input text was converted properly but recognized as a different style (for example source as Scientific rather than ISO-R9) Some transliteration styles are partially equal (in particular ISO-R9 and Scientific, bot other styles, too) The conversion is correct. In this case the expected transliteration style is congruent to the style used by CyrAcademisator
The text was converted wrongly The input transliteration is not supported (ALA-LC without diacritics, BGN / PCGN without interpuncts) Text cannot be converted correctly
The input is not Russian. CyrAcademisator only supports Russian
The input is not a correct transliteration or a mixture of different transliteration styles Check input
The input is a transcription Text cannot be converted correctly. Transcriptions can only be defined as target and not as source
Error in CyrAcademisator Please give me a message.

Notes on the transliteration styles

ISO R/9

Advanced settings: input and output

It is possible to convert from one variant of ISO R/9 to another (From: ISO R/9 - To: ISO R/9 + advanced settings).

Features: A standard from 1968. Allows several exceptions and variants. Due to missing standardisation of Old Church Slavonic letters these will be converted according the Scientific conversion style. Conversion differs between Russian Church Slavonic (modern pronounciation) and Old Church Slavonic.

ISO 9 / GOST 7.79A

Advanced settings: not possible

Features: A standard from 2000. In this case GOST and ISO are congruent. Each modern Cyrillic letter is assigned to a single Latin letter. This standard contains all modern Cyrillic letters regardless their pronounciation in the different languages. Church Slavonic letters are only defined if they are used in a modern language.

Transliteration from ALA-LC to Cyrillic works correctly only with the use of the correspondent diacritic letters! See also: ALA-LC Romanization Tables. When transliterationg from Cyrillic to ALA-LC the diacritics can be turned off in the advanced settings.

Advanced settings: output

Features: Scientific standard in the English-speaking countries. Diacritics may be turned of in the advanced settings. Conversion differs between Russian Church Slavonic (modern pronounciation) and Old Church Slavonic.

Duden

The Danish standard for transliteration of Russian is defined by Dansk Sprognævn, the Danish Language Committee. Some inaccuracies of this standard can be changed in the advanced settings: change of the transliteration ofж to zj (instead of sj, which is aready used for ш).
